Discover the story behind Chompers Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics in South San Francisco and our commitment to child-focused care. CHOMPERS Our History Schedule Appointment A Legacy of Smiles: Our History of Exceptional Care Chompers Pediatric Dentistry has a long and distinguished history of serving families in our community. Our practice was established in the 1950s by the renowned Dr. Arthur Dugoni, the first and only person in the United States or Canada to have a dental school named in his honor. Dr. Dugoni’s vision and dedication laid the foundation for the exceptional pediatric dental care we continue to provide today. In 1960, Dr. Charles Bona took over the practice when Dr. Dugoni pursued graduate studies in orthodontics. Dr. Bona dedicated over 40 years to taking exceptional care of his young patients. His gentle and caring approach endeared him to the children and families of our area, and the success of his practice was a testament to his commitment to pediatric dentistry. In 2003, Dr. Bona met Dr. Kenny Tse, and they instantly felt a strong connection. Their shared views on pediatric dentistry made the transition smooth and seamless. Dr. Kenny admired Dr. Bona's dedication and compassionate care, and he was honored to continue the legacy that Dr. Bona had built. Together, they attended numerous continuing education courses and enjoyed regular lunches, forging a close mentorship and friendship. After retiring, Dr. Bona devoted his time to his passions, including showing Championship Mastiff dogs and sailing. He remained a valued mentor and friend to Dr. Kenny until his passing in 2018. Dr. Bona’s legacy lives on at Chompers Pediatric Dentistry, where we strive to uphold the high standards of care and compassion that he exemplified. Our practice continues to honor the pioneering spirit of Dr. Dugoni and the gentle care of Dr. Bona. At Chompers, we are committed to providing the highest quality dental care to children in our community, building on the strong foundation established by our esteemed predecessors. Our history is a testament to our enduring dedication to pediatric dental excellence.

Thoughtful Planning Planned With Care Sedation visits are planned in advance and scheduled thoughtfully to allow time for questions, preparation, and recovery. We’ll guide you through every step before the appointment. COMMUNICATION Clear Communication We believe parents should feel informed and confident. You’ll have time to ask questions, understand options, and decide what feels right for your child—without pressure. Gentle Sedation for a Stress-Free Experience Some children need extra support during dental visits due to anxiety, age, sensory sensitivities, or treatment needs. We offer carefully selected sedation options and take time to help families understand what’s appropriate, safe, and best for their child. A Thoughtful, Individualized Approach Sedation is never a one-size-fits-all decision. We carefully consider your child’s age, health history, comfort level, and treatment needs before recommending any option. Our goal is always to support a positive experience while prioritizing safety and communication. When We Recommend Sedation Sedation may be recommended if your child: Has dental anxiety or fear of dental procedures Is too young to tolerate treatment comfortably Needs significant or complex dental work Has a strong gag reflex or difficulty getting numb Has developmental or medical needs that make traditional treatment more challenging Every child is different — and so is their care plan. Sedation Options at Chompers Depending on your child’s needs, we may recommend one of the following sedation options. We’ll walk you through each choice and answer all questions before moving forward. 1. Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) This is a mild, safe sedative that helps your child feel relaxed during treatment. Inhaled through a soft nose mask Takes effect quickly Allows your child to stay awake and responsive Wears off within minutes of stopping Nitrous is ideal for children with mild to moderate anxiety or those undergoing shorter procedures. 2. General Anesthesia (In-Office) For children who need a deeper level of sedation, we offer hospital-grade general anesthesia right here in our office. Anesthesia is provided by a licensed medical or dental anesthesiologist who is experienced in pediatric care and focused entirely on your child’s safety and comfort. • Your child sleeps comfortably through the procedure • An anesthesiologist monitors your child continuously from start to finish • Treatment can be completed safely and efficiently in one visit • Care is provided in a familiar, supportive office setting Meet Our Anesthesia Team Board-Certified Medical and Dental Anesthesiologists At Chompers, we partner with a trusted team of board-certified medical and dental anesthesiologists who specialize in caring for children. These providers have extensive experience in pediatric anesthesia and hospital-level safety protocols. Depending on scheduling and your child’s specific needs, anesthesia may be provided by a medical anesthesiologist or a dental anesthesiologist. Regardless of who is caring for your child on the day of treatment, our standards for safety, monitoring, and communication remain the same. We understand that sedation can feel overwhelming for parents. That’s why we take time to review the plan with you in advance, answer questions, and make sure you feel confident and informed every step of the way. Why We Don’t Offer Oral Sedation Some parents ask about oral sedation, which involves giving a liquid or pill medication before treatment. At Chompers, we don’t offer oral sedation because it doesn’t allow the same level of predictability, monitoring, or real-time adjustment as other options. Oral medications cannot be adjusted once taken, and their effects can vary significantly from child to child. Monitoring is also more limited compared to nitrous oxide or in-office general anesthesia. For these reasons, we prioritize sedation approaches that offer greater safety, consistency, and control—so your child can be cared for as comfortably and safely as possible. We’re always happy to talk through sedation options with you and help determine what feels right for your child. What to Expect After Sedation After Nitrous Oxide: Wears off within minutes Your child can return to normal activities right away After General Anesthesia: Your child may feel drowsy or groggy for a few hours Encourage rest and fluids Soft foods are best for the rest of the day Avoid strenuous activity until fully alert You’ll receive customized aftercare instructions at the visit. And we’re always just a phone call away if you have questions. Will my child be completely asleep with general anesthesia? Yes. With general anesthesia, your child will be fully asleep and comfortable throughout the procedure. A licensed anesthesiologist monitors your child continuously from start to finish. Is sedation safe for children? When sedation is recommended, it is planned carefully and monitored closely. We follow strict safety protocols and work with experienced anesthesia providers whose sole focus is your child’s safety and well-being. Will my child remember anything? Most children do not remember their dental treatment when general anesthesia is used. With nitrous oxide (laughing gas), children are awake and aware, but often remember the visit as calm, relaxed, and easier than expected. What if I’m nervous about sedation? That’s completely understandable. We’ll take time to answer your questions, explain all options, and review the plan in advance so you feel informed and comfortable before moving forward. How do I prepare my child for sedation? We’ll provide clear instructions ahead of time, including eating and drinking guidelines and what to expect on the day of treatment. Our team will review everything with you before the appointment. Who provides sedation or anesthesia during my child’s visit? Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is administered and monitored by our trained dental team during your child’s visit. For general anesthesia, care is provided by a licensed medical anesthesiologist or dental anesthesiologist with experience in pediatric anesthesia. An anesthesia provider is dedicated solely to monitoring your child from start to finish. Sedation FAQs WHAT PARENTS SAY ABOUT US Chompers remains the best pediatric dentist office we’ve experienced. - Pediatric Dental Emergencies South San Francisco | Chompers
Chompers Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics treats pediatric dental emergencies in South San Francisco with prompt, compassionate urgent care. PARENT HUB Dental Emergencies in South San Francisco, CA Schedule Appointment General Pediatric Dental Emergencies Dental emergencies can be stressful for both children and parents. The information below can help you know what to do and when to contact our pediatric dental team. Toothache in Children (What Parents Can Do) - Be sure that the affected area is thoroughly cleaned and that there is no food or other debris trapped inside or around the tooth. You can brush and floss the area as well as rinse the mouth vigorously with warm salt water to try to dislodge any debris. You may also apply a cold compress or ice wrapped in a cloth. Do not put heat or aspirin on the affected area. Give the appropriate dose of pain relief medication and call the office to make an appointment. Broken Braces or Orthodontic Appliances - Often broken or loose braces or appliances will cause no pain and not require immediate attention but do need to be fixed to be sure further damage does not occur. If straight/sharp wire ends are present, cover them with cotton balls, chewing gum, or folded gauze. Broken pieces may be removed if they come out easily. If a wire is painful to remove or caught directly in the gums, cheek or tongue, call the office immediately. Broken, Chipped, or Fractured Tooth - If a tooth is broken, chipped, or fractured, quick action can save the tooth, prevent infection, and reduce the need for future dental treatment. Immediately rinse the injured area with warm water and place a cold compress over the face in the area of the injury to reduce swelling. Schedule an emergency appointment as soon as possible. If you can find the broken tooth fragment, rinse it with water and place it in a clean container with milk, saliva, or water. Bring it with you to the office. Facial Swelling or Signs of Dental Infection - If the face is swollen due to a tooth infection, it could be a life-threatening situation and your child may need to go to a hospital emergency room immediately. Place a cold compress on the face and call our office for a telephone consultation. We will evaluate where the infection is and how it should be treated. Canker Sores and Cold Sores in Children - Children occasionally experience cold sores around the lips and canker sores inside the mouth. Products are available at your local pharmacy that will help minimize the pain and discomfort. Be sure that the product is approved for use on children. The sores most often take one to two weeks to completely heal. If the sores are occurring frequently or lasting longer than expected, please call. Some diseases can begin as simple sores and may require prescription medications. Bitten or Cut Tongue, Lip, or Cheek - If there is bleeding, apply firm yet gentle pressure to the wound with a clean gauze or cloth. If there are areas that appear swollen or bruised and are causing soreness, apply a cold compress. If bleeding from the wound persists for more than fifteen minutes, your child may need to be taken to the emergency room for further attention. Depending on the extent of the injury, an appointment can be made to assess any injury to tissues around the mouth, the bones, or to the teeth. Dental Emergencies Involving Baby Teeth Knocked-Out Baby Tooth (What Parents Should Do) - If one of your child’s baby teeth is unexpectedly knocked out, DO NOT TRY TO RE-IMPLANT A BABY TOOTH. Doing so may damage the growing permanent tooth. You should contact our office as soon as possible to schedule an appointment to evaluate the impact to any other teeth, the jawbone, or other tissues around the mouth. Bleeding After a Baby Tooth Falls Out - If a loose baby tooth falls out and bleeds, have your child bite on a clean folded gaze or cloth for ten minutes while sitting and remaining calm. If bleeding persists, repeat this process. Baby Tooth is Turning Dark - If a baby tooth is losing its white color and turning dark, it is most often an indication of previous trauma. If there is any swelling, tenderness, or loss of white color, make an appointment as soon as possible. Dental Emergencies Involving Permanent Teeth Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth (Urgent Dental Emergency) - Time is the critical factor in saving a permanent tooth. Contact the office immediately. Find the tooth and gently rinse it with room temperature water. Be sure to hold the tooth by the crown, not the root, and DO NOT scrub the tooth. If possible, replace the tooth in the socket and hold it there with clean gauze or cloth. If the tooth cannot be placed in the socket, place the tooth in a clean container with milk, saliva, or water and bring it to the dentist immediately. The faster you act, the better the chances are for saving the tooth. Permanent Tooth Turning Dark or Gray - If a permanent tooth appears to be losing its white color and turning dark, you should schedule an appointment as soon as possible. This is most often evidence of previous trauma and signals the death of the tooth. The tooth needs to be examined and action will need to be taken. When to Call Our Office If your child experiences pain, swelling, trauma, or a knocked-out tooth, please contact our office as soon as possible. Our team can help determine next steps and guide you through care. WHAT PARENTS SAY ABOUT US Chompers remains the best pediatric dentist office we’ve experienced. This helps keep them relaxed and creates a positive association with dental visits. Whether your child is visiting for a routine procedure or needs additional support during treatment, our goal is always the same: to provide high-quality dental care in an environment where they feel comfortable, cared for, and confident. Not every child needs a private room — but when they do, we’re ready. WHAT PARENTS SAY ABOUT US Chompers remains the best pediatric dentist office we’ve experienced. We’ve had both good and bad experiences previously and once we found chompers we were hooked. Thank you for always caring for my kids, never shaming, always encouraging, partnering with parents, and generally just being wonderful. Nicole R. Parent Hear them

PARKING Parking Spot Hassle-free parking right at our doorstep, so you can focus on your little one’s smile! Why Retainers Matter Once teeth are straight, they still need a little help staying that way. Without retainers, teeth can slowly shift back over time—especially during the first few months after treatment. That’s why we like to say: “Wear your retainers as long as you want your teeth to stay straight!” We provide both removable and fixed retainers, depending on your needs and preferences. Most patients will wear their retainers at night only, and that often becomes part of their long-term bedtime routine. Retainers Are Included At Chompers, your retainers are included in the cost of orthodontic treatment—no hidden fees or surprises. We’ll also walk you through how to use and care for them, step by step. Lost or Broken Retainer? It happens! If you lose or damage your retainer, call us right away. We’ll work quickly to make a replacement before your teeth start shifting. The sooner we act, the easier it is to maintain your beautiful results. Follow-Up After Orthodontics We’re still here for you after treatment ends. Our typical post-treatment schedule includes: 2-month checkup to ensure the retainer fits perfectly and everything is stable 6-month follow-up to assess long-term retention and answer any questions If you also see us for dental care, Dr. Kat may do complimentary retainer checks during your regular cleanings—just one more way we help make orthodontic aftercare easy and seamless. Long-Term Smile Success Retainers are part of your long-term oral health journey, and we’re honored to be part of it. Whether you’re local to South San Francisco or travel in from afar, we’re here to support every step of the way. PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY AT CHOMPERS Preserving Space for Healthy Growth When a baby tooth is lost too early due to injury or decay, the surrounding teeth can shift into the empty space—leading to alignment issues and crowding. Space maintainers are custom devices that hold that space open until the permanent tooth is ready to come in, helping to guide your child’s smile into proper alignment. Simple Devices, Big Benefits Though small, space maintainers play a big role in long-term oral health. They prevent future orthodontic complications and reduce the need for more invasive treatments later. At Chompers, we tailor each device to fit your child comfortably and effectively, ensuring their growing mouth stays on the right track. Early Prevention, Lifelong Smiles Proactive care is key to healthy development. Space maintainers help protect your child’s bite, jaw alignment, and speech development by preserving the natural spacing of their teeth. It’s a preventive step that supports a lifetime of healthy, confident smiles. WHAT PARENTS SAY ABOUT US Chompers remains the best pediatric dentist office we’ve experienced.
