Why Restorative Care Is So Important Restorative care helps protect your child’s comfort, oral health, and confidence. Addressing concerns early can prevent discomfort, reduce the need for more complex treatment, and support healthy development. • Helps relieve discomfort and protect teeth • Prevents small issues from becoming bigger concerns • Supports healthy chewing, speech, and development • Helps children feel confident about dental care • Provides peace of mind for families Restorative visits are tailored to each child’s needs and may include gentle treatments designed to repair and protect teeth while prioritizing comfort. Fillings What is a dental filling? A dental filling is used to repair a tooth affected by a cavity. The damaged area is cleaned, and the tooth is restored with a durable material to protect it and help it function normally. Why are fillings important for kids? Fillings help stop cavities from getting larger, protect the tooth, and reduce the risk of pain or infection. Treating cavities early also helps keep treatment simpler and more comfortable. What type of fillings do you use? We typically use tooth-colored fillings that blend naturally with your child’s teeth. We’ll recommend the most appropriate material based on your child’s age, tooth location, and specific needs. Will my child be comfortable during a filling? Yes. We focus on gentle techniques, clear explanations, and helping your child feel calm and supported throughout the visit. Comfort is always a priority. How long does a filling appointment take? Most filling appointments are relatively short. The exact length depends on the size and location of the cavity, and we’ll let you know what to expect ahead of time. How do you help kids feel positive about fillings? We take a kid-friendly approach by explaining things in simple terms, moving at a comfortable pace, and offering encouragement along the way. Many children are surprised by how easy the visit feels. Crowns What is a dental crown? A dental crown is a protective covering that fits over a tooth to restore its strength, shape, and function after damage from decay or injury. When does a child need a crown? A crown may be recommended when a tooth has significant decay, a large cavity, or structural damage that can’t be safely repaired with a filling alone. What types of crowns do you offer? We offer several crown options depending on your child’s age, tooth location, and needs. We’ll explain the choices clearly and recommend what’s most appropriate for your child. Why are crowns important for baby teeth? Baby teeth play an important role in chewing, speech, and guiding adult teeth into place. Crowns help protect these teeth until they’re ready to fall out naturally. Will my child be comfortable getting a crown? Yes. We focus on gentle techniques, clear explanations, and a calm approach. Our goal is to help your child feel safe and supported throughout the entire visit. How long does a crown last on a child’s tooth? Crowns on baby teeth are designed to last until the tooth naturally falls out. We monitor them at regular visits to make sure they continue to function well. Extractions Why would a child need a tooth extracted? A tooth may need to be removed if it is severely damaged, infected, or causing problems with spacing or development. We only recommend extractions when they’re truly necessary. Will my child be in pain during an extraction? Our priority is your child’s comfort. We use gentle techniques and appropriate numbing so your child stays comfortable throughout the procedure. How do you help kids feel calm during extractions? We take time to explain things in age-appropriate ways, move at a comfortable pace, and provide reassurance throughout the visit. For children who need extra support, we’ll discuss comfort options ahead of time. How long does it take to recover after an extraction? Most children recover quickly. We’ll provide clear aftercare instructions and guidance to help healing go smoothly at home. What happens after a tooth is removed? After an extraction, we’ll talk with you about next steps, which may include monitoring healing or discussing space maintenance if needed. Will an extraction affect my child’s adult teeth? In some cases, removing a baby tooth can help guide proper development. We’ll explain how an extraction fits into your child’s overall dental plan before moving forward. Pulp Therapy What is pulp therapy? Pulp therapy is a treatment used to remove infected tissue from inside a baby tooth while preserving the tooth’s structure and function until it naturally falls out. Why would my child need pulp therapy? Pulp therapy may be recommended when a cavity has reached the inner part of the tooth and is causing infection or discomfort. Treating it early can help prevent pain and protect the tooth. Is pulp therapy the same as a root canal? Pulp therapy is sometimes called a “baby root canal,” but it’s different from adult root canal treatment. The procedure is simpler and designed specifically for baby teeth. Will the treatment hurt my child? Our priority is your child’s comfort. We use gentle techniques and appropriate numbing so your child stays comfortable throughout the procedure. Why is pulp therapy important for baby teeth? Baby teeth help with chewing, speech development, and guiding adult teeth into place. Pulp therapy helps preserve these teeth until they’re ready to fall out naturally. How do you make the experience stress-free? We take time to explain each step in kid-friendly ways, move at a comfortable pace, and provide reassurance throughout the visit. For children who need extra support, we’ll discuss comfort options with you ahead of time. Space Maintainers Supporting Long-Term Development What is a space maintainer? A space maintainer is a custom dental appliance that keeps space open after a baby tooth is lost too early. This helps guide the permanent tooth into the correct position. Why are space maintainers important for children? When a baby tooth is lost early, nearby teeth can shift into that space. A space maintainer helps prevent crowding and supports healthy alignment as adult teeth develop. When does my child need a space maintainer? A space maintainer may be recommended if a baby tooth is lost well before the permanent tooth is ready to come in. We’ll evaluate your child’s growth and explain whether one is helpful. Are space maintainers comfortable for children? Yes. Space maintainers are designed to be comfortable and easy to adjust to. Most children adapt quickly and go about their normal routines without issue. How long does a space maintainer stay in place? The appliance stays in place until the permanent tooth begins to come in. We monitor it at regular visits and remove it when it’s no longer needed. How do space maintainers support long-term oral health? By preserving proper spacing, space maintainers can reduce the risk of crowding, misalignment, and the need for more complex treatment later on. Our Promise to Parents We always explain the “why” and “how” in plain language We let you stay involved every step of the way We work at your child’s pace — never a rushed one We care about your child’s comfort and your concerns Have Questions About a Treatment? You’re not alone — and we’re here to talk you through every step. Discover the story behind Chompers Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics in South San Francisco and our commitment to child-focused care. CHOMPERS Our History Schedule Appointment A Legacy of Smiles: Our History of Exceptional Care Chompers Pediatric Dentistry has a long and distinguished history of serving families in our community. Our practice was established in the 1950s by the renowned Dr. Arthur Dugoni, the first and only person in the United States or Canada to have a dental school named in his honor. Dr. Dugoni’s vision and dedication laid the foundation for the exceptional pediatric dental care we continue to provide today. In 1960, Dr. Charles Bona took over the practice when Dr. Dugoni pursued graduate studies in orthodontics. Dr. Bona dedicated over 40 years to taking exceptional care of his young patients. His gentle and caring approach endeared him to the children and families of our area, and the success of his practice was a testament to his commitment to pediatric dentistry. In 2003, Dr. Bona met Dr. Kenny Tse, and they instantly felt a strong connection. Their shared views on pediatric dentistry made the transition smooth and seamless. Dr. Kenny admired Dr. Bona's dedication and compassionate care, and he was honored to continue the legacy that Dr. Bona had built. Together, they attended numerous continuing education courses and enjoyed regular lunches, forging a close mentorship and friendship. After retiring, Dr. Bona devoted his time to his passions, including showing Championship Mastiff dogs and sailing. He remained a valued mentor and friend to Dr. Kenny until his passing in 2018. Dr. Bona’s legacy lives on at Chompers Pediatric Dentistry, where we strive to uphold the high standards of care and compassion that he exemplified. Our practice continues to honor the pioneering spirit of Dr. Dugoni and the gentle care of Dr. Bona. At Chompers, we are committed to providing the highest quality dental care to children in our community, building on the strong foundation established by our esteemed predecessors. Our history is a testament to our enduring dedication to pediatric dental excellence.

PARKING Free Parking Hassle-free parking right at our doorstep, so you can focus on your little one’s smile! PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY AT CHOMPERS Protecting Tiny Teeth: The Power of Dental Sealants Dental sealants are a simple yet highly effective way to protect your child’s teeth from cavities. Applied as a thin, protective coating to the grooves of the back molars, sealants act as a barrier against food particles and plaque that brushing alone can’t always reach. This quick and painless procedure can dramatically reduce the risk of tooth decay, especially during the cavity-prone years of childhood. Are Dental Sealants Good for Kids? Absolutely! Dental sealants are one of the most effective ways to prevent cavities in children. Kids' back teeth have deep grooves that can trap food and bacteria, even with regular brushing. Sealants act like a shield, covering those vulnerable areas and making it harder for decay to take hold. They're safe, quick to apply, and can protect your child’s teeth for years—especially during the cavity-prone ages of 6 to 14. Think of them as an extra layer of defense for your child’s growing smile. A Smart Step for a Healthy Smile Even with great brushing habits, kids can still struggle to clean every corner of their mouths—especially those hard-to-reach back teeth. Sealants fill in those deep grooves, preventing bacteria from settling in and turning into decay. At Chompers Pediatric Dentistry, we often recommend sealants shortly after permanent molars come in, giving your child long-lasting protection and peace of mind. Sedation decisions are made carefully, with safety, communication, and your child’s comfort as the priority. Thoughtful Planning Planned With Care Sedation visits are planned in advance and scheduled thoughtfully to allow time for questions, preparation, and recovery. We’ll guide you through every step before the appointment. COMMUNICATION Clear Communication We believe parents should feel informed and confident. You’ll have time to ask questions, understand options, and decide what feels right for your child—without pressure. Gentle Sedation for a Stress-Free Experience Some children need extra support during dental visits due to anxiety, age, sensory sensitivities, or treatment needs. We offer carefully selected sedation options and take time to help families understand what’s appropriate, safe, and best for their child. A Thoughtful, Individualized Approach Sedation is never a one-size-fits-all decision. We carefully consider your child’s age, health history, comfort level, and treatment needs before recommending any option. Our goal is always to support a positive experience while prioritizing safety and communication. When We Recommend Sedation Sedation may be recommended if your child: Has dental anxiety or fear of dental procedures Is too young to tolerate treatment comfortably Needs significant or complex dental work Has a strong gag reflex or difficulty getting numb Has developmental or medical needs that make traditional treatment more challenging Every child is different — and so is their care plan. Sedation Options at Chompers Depending on your child’s needs, we may recommend one of the following sedation options. We’ll walk you through each choice and answer all questions before moving forward. 1. Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) This is a mild, safe sedative that helps your child feel relaxed during treatment. Inhaled through a soft nose mask Takes effect quickly Allows your child to stay awake and responsive Wears off within minutes of stopping Nitrous is ideal for children with mild to moderate anxiety or those undergoing shorter procedures. 2. General Anesthesia (In-Office) For children who need a deeper level of sedation, we offer hospital-grade general anesthesia right here in our office. Anesthesia is provided by a licensed medical or dental anesthesiologist who is experienced in pediatric care and focused entirely on your child’s safety and comfort. • Your child sleeps comfortably through the procedure • An anesthesiologist monitors your child continuously from start to finish • Treatment can be completed safely and efficiently in one visit • Care is provided in a familiar, supportive office setting Meet Our Anesthesia Team Board-Certified Medical and Dental Anesthesiologists At Chompers, we partner with a trusted team of board-certified medical and dental anesthesiologists who specialize in caring for children. These providers have extensive experience in pediatric anesthesia and hospital-level safety protocols. Depending on scheduling and your child’s specific needs, anesthesia may be provided by a medical anesthesiologist or a dental anesthesiologist. Regardless of who is caring for your child on the day of treatment, our standards for safety, monitoring, and communication remain the same. We understand that sedation can feel overwhelming for parents. That’s why we take time to review the plan with you in advance, answer questions, and make sure you feel confident and informed every step of the way. Why We Don’t Offer Oral Sedation Some parents ask about oral sedation, which involves giving a liquid or pill medication before treatment. At Chompers, we don’t offer oral sedation because it doesn’t allow the same level of predictability, monitoring, or real-time adjustment as other options. Oral medications cannot be adjusted once taken, and their effects can vary significantly from child to child. Monitoring is also more limited compared to nitrous oxide or in-office general anesthesia. For these reasons, we prioritize sedation approaches that offer greater safety, consistency, and control—so your child can be cared for as comfortably and safely as possible. We’re always happy to talk through sedation options with you and help determine what feels right for your child. What to Expect After Sedation After Nitrous Oxide: Wears off within minutes Your child can return to normal activities right away After General Anesthesia: Your child may feel drowsy or groggy for a few hours Encourage rest and fluids Soft foods are best for the rest of the day Avoid strenuous activity until fully alert You’ll receive customized aftercare instructions at the visit. And we’re always just a phone call away if you have questions. Will my child be completely asleep with general anesthesia? Yes. With general anesthesia, your child will be fully asleep and comfortable throughout the procedure. A licensed anesthesiologist monitors your child continuously from start to finish. Is sedation safe for children? When sedation is recommended, it is planned carefully and monitored closely. We follow strict safety protocols and work with experienced anesthesia providers whose sole focus is your child’s safety and well-being. Will my child remember anything? Most children do not remember their dental treatment when general anesthesia is used. With nitrous oxide (laughing gas), children are awake and aware, but often remember the visit as calm, relaxed, and easier than expected. What if I’m nervous about sedation? That’s completely understandable. We’ll take time to answer your questions, explain all options, and review the plan in advance so you feel informed and comfortable before moving forward. How do I prepare my child for sedation? We’ll provide clear instructions ahead of time, including eating and drinking guidelines and what to expect on the day of treatment. Our team will review everything with you before the appointment. Who provides sedation or anesthesia during my child’s visit? Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is administered and monitored by our trained dental team during your child’s visit. For general anesthesia, care is provided by a licensed medical anesthesiologist or dental anesthesiologist with experience in pediatric anesthesia. An anesthesia provider is dedicated solely to monitoring your child from start to finish. Sedation FAQs WHAT PARENTS SAY ABOUT US Chompers remains the best pediatric dentist office we’ve experienced.
