Our Approach
Experienced, Safety-Focused Team
Our doctors and clinical team are experienced in caring for children who need extra support. Sedation decisions are made carefully, with safety, communication, and your child’s comfort as the priority.
Thoughtful Planning
Planned With Care
Sedation visits are planned in advance and scheduled thoughtfully to allow time for questions, preparation, and recovery. We’ll guide you through every step before the appointment.
COMMUNICATION
Clear Communication
We believe parents should feel informed and confident. You’ll have time to ask questions, understand options, and decide what feels right for your child—without pressure.
Gentle Sedation for a Stress-Free Experience
Some children need extra support during dental visits due to anxiety, age, sensory sensitivities, or treatment needs. We offer carefully selected sedation options and take time to help families understand what’s appropriate, safe, and best for their child.
A Thoughtful, Individualized Approach
Sedation is never a one-size-fits-all decision. We carefully consider your child’s age, health history, comfort level, and treatment needs before recommending any option. Our goal is always to support a positive experience while prioritizing safety and communication.

When We Recommend Sedation
Sedation may be recommended if your child:
-
Has dental anxiety or fear of dental procedures
-
Is too young to tolerate treatment comfortably
-
Needs significant or complex dental work
-
Has a strong gag reflex or difficulty getting numb
-
Has developmental or medical needs that make traditional treatment more challenging
Every child is different — and so is their care plan.
Sedation Options at Chompers
Depending on your child’s needs, we may recommend one of the following sedation options. We’ll walk you through each choice and answer all questions before moving forward.
1. Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
This is a mild, safe sedative that helps your child feel relaxed during treatment.
-
Inhaled through a soft nose mask
-
Takes effect quickly
-
Allows your child to stay awake and responsive
-
Wears off within minutes of stopping
Nitrous is ideal for children with mild to moderate anxiety or those undergoing shorter procedures.
2. General Anesthesia (In-Office)
For children who need a deeper level of sedation, we offer hospital-grade general anesthesia right here in our office. Anesthesia is provided by a licensed medical or dental anesthesiologist who is experienced in pediatric care and focused entirely on your child’s safety and comfort.
-
• Your child sleeps comfortably through the procedure
• An anesthesiologist monitors your child continuously from start to finish
• Treatment can be completed safely and efficiently in one visit
• Care is provided in a familiar, supportive office setting

Meet Our Anesthesia Team
Board-Certified Medical and Dental Anesthesiologists
At Chompers, we partner with a trusted team of board-certified medical and dental anesthesiologists who specialize in caring for children. These providers have extensive experience in pediatric anesthesia and hospital-level safety protocols.
Depending on scheduling and your child’s specific needs, anesthesia may be provided by a medical anesthesiologist or a dental anesthesiologist. Regardless of who is caring for your child on the day of treatment, our standards for safety, monitoring, and communication remain the same.
We understand that sedation can feel overwhelming for parents. That’s why we take time to review the plan with you in advance, answer questions, and make sure you feel confident and informed every step of the way.
Why We Don’t Offer Oral Sedation
Some parents ask about oral sedation, which involves giving a liquid or pill medication before treatment. At Chompers, we don’t offer oral sedation because it doesn’t allow the same level of predictability, monitoring, or real-time adjustment as other options.
Oral medications cannot be adjusted once taken, and their effects can vary significantly from child to child. Monitoring is also more limited compared to nitrous oxide or in-office general anesthesia.
For these reasons, we prioritize sedation approaches that offer greater safety, consistency, and control—so your child can be cared for as comfortably and safely as possible.
We’re always happy to talk through sedation options with you and help determine what feels right for your child.
What to Expect After Sedation
After Nitrous Oxide:

You’ll receive customized aftercare instructions at the visit. And we’re always just a phone call away if you have questions.
